Modern Hoop Dance

Description:
Modern hula hoop dance, or “Hoop Dance Flow,” is the practice of dancing with a hula hoop as a prop.
Hula hoops have a long history, dating back to ancient Egypt. Native American communities independently developed hoop dance traditions using multiple hoops for storytelling, which remain an important part of their cultural heritage. Hoops appeared recreationally in 14th-century England, later as a form of physical fitness in the late 1800s, and became widely known in the 1950s as a children’s toy.
Today, hula hooping has re-emerged through circus arts, gymnastics, festival culture, and as an accessible option for adult movement and fitness.
In our classes, we teach the fundamentals of modern hula hoop as a movement practice that is accessible across ages and experience levels. It blends exercise and dance, offering a gentle, full-body workout that builds coordination, strength, and endurance while keeping you engaged with music.
As you develop technique, the goal is to find a sense of flow—where movement becomes continuous and responsive, and your attention stays grounded in the present moment. You begin to work with the hoop rather than against it, building rhythm, control, and creative expression.
This class is well-suited for anyone open to trying something new, those looking to build a skill they can practice independently, and current hoopers wanting to strengthen their foundation.
